Republicans Go After Social Security on Day One

God, Republicans hate Social Security. How much do they hate it? Let me count the ways.

It's a ponzi scheme. (It is not a Ponzi scheme, you ignorant sluts)

It will go broke and young people won't get benefits (buy a clue, you lying jackals)

It's just a bunch of IOUs. (Liars go to hell. You know that don't you?)

People would be better off if they could invest the money themselves, like Dubya wanted. (A-HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!)

In spite of the drumbeat of lies that spew from the foetid bowels of the many of our finest wingnut welfare address drop boxes, Social Security remains wildly popular. So Republicans have a dilemma in their quest to repeal this New Deal program that keeps millions of people out of poverty. What to do?

The latest flanking maneuver from the new Republican majority in Congress is a little gem. The proposal, put forth on the first day of the 2015 session, would change a procedure under which money can be transferred from the SS retirement program to the disability program. How innocuous does that sound? Who but a policy wonk would even know about such a thing?

Here's the deal. When the disability program is getting low on funds, current rules provide for an automatic transfer of funds from the retirement program. Talking Points Memo explains:

The House GOP's rule change would still allow for a reallocation from the retirement fund to shore up the disability fund -- but only if an accompanying proposal "improves the overall financial health of the combined Social Security Trust Funds," per the rule, expected to be passed on Tuesday. While that language is vague, experts say it would likely mean any reallocation would have to be balanced by new revenues or benefit cuts.
